    The British High Commission represents the UK government in Commonwealth countries, working to strengthen diplomatic ties, promote trade and investment, and support British nationals abroad. It operates under the wider framework of the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, delivering foreign policy objectives, development programmes, and consular services across Africa, Asia, Europe, and beyond.

     

    With a global footprint spanning over 100 countries, the British High Commission plays a critical role in policy engagement, economic partnerships, security cooperation, and international development. Its work directly influences trade agreements, education partnerships, visa services, and humanitarian initiatives.     Below are some of the roles currently advertised across various countries:

    Business Development & Growth Adviser SEO – Abuja

    Responsibilities:

    Pipeline development (55%): Provide technical leadership for Pathway 1 of the UK Nigeria Growth programme by working closely with DBT on the identification and prioritisation of investable projects in ETIP sectors such as renewable energy, agribusiness, and tech. Provide a facilitation role focused on pipeline management, removing non-financial barriers, and convening and coordinating stakeholder inputs.

    Strategic Relationship Management (25%)): Develop and sustain trusted relationships with influential and high-profile private sector leaders, alongside senior officials in Nigerian MDAs, IFIs, and development partners.

    Essential Qualifications:

    • Degree level education, with 8-10 years’ relevant experience
    • Proven senior level experience in pipeline development, deal facilitation, investment readiness and stakeholder coordination.
    • Significant depth of knowledge on private finance instruments, including de-risking tools, blended finance structures, guarantees, first-loss instruments, and concessional capital.
    • Strong understanding of trade policy, investment facilitation and market-access reforms.
    • Experience of working with DFIs/IFIs and export credit agencies.
    • Excellent stakeholder management and negotiation skills across public and private sectors.

    Admin Assistant – Kampala

    Responsibilities:

    • Manage the printing, logging and filing returned copies of Note Verbales issued by the team
    • Manage team contact management system – keep contacts up to date in a sharable format
    • Be the initial point of contact for all team related visa enquires; including logging high value cases on the UKVI App
    • Provide logistical support to the team for large internal meetings, or with external attendees.
    • Provide logistical support for team travel; for example booking transport and hotels etc.
    • Working with relevant BHC teams e.g. Protocol, Security, policy teams, to provide logistical support to Ministerial and high level official visitors.
    • Manage team events: issue invitations and monitor RSVPs; liaise with the BHC Events Officer, corporate services, residence, and security teams (where relevant), oversee set ups etc.

     

    Essential Qualifications:

    • Excellent written and oral communication.
    • Excellent knowledge of IT applications; especially Teams and Outlook Contacts, but also including Excel, Word and other FCDO systems.
    • Understanding of filing systems

     

    Licensing Officer – Washington

    Responsibilities:

    1.    Act as the UK MOD’s authorized applicant and “Empowered Official” for all U.S. export and import licensing applications and formal correspondence.
    2.    Ensure UK MOD compliance with U.S. regulations, including ITAR and EAR, governing defence hardware and technical data transfers.
    3.    Manage approvals for temporary import of UK defence materiel into the U.S. for exercises, trials, and similar activities.
    4.    Provide procedural advice on U.S. licensing controls to MOD project teams, UK Government departments, defence contractors, and embassy personnel.
    5.    Oversee end-use assurances and compliance for significant defence acquisitions and transfers.
    6.    Contribute to team data and reporting for Counsellor Defence Acquisition and Trade.

    Essential Qualifications:

    • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
    • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to be professional, confident, and able to deal with interlocutors at senior level.

    • Excellent organisation skills, ability to multi-task and attention to detail.

    Consular Officer – Heraklion, Crete

    Responsibilities:

    • Providing consular support (including occasionally out of hours) to vulnerable UK Nationals (70%) – including: vulnerable elderly, those with mental health issues, victims of crime, including rape and sexual assault victim, those arrested or detained, those in hospital.
    • Providing notarial services for UK Nationals (5%)
    • Providing Emergency Travel Documents (5%)
    • Travel within Greece to offer face to face support to British nationals and to provide resilience to other consular teams (5%)
    • Readiness to react in a crisis situation to support UK nationals (5%)

     

    Essential Qualifications:

    • Full professional proficiency in English and Greek at a minimum of C1 level according to CEFR*;
    • Proven customer service experience of at least three years and a strong sense of customer service delivery, including an ability to support customers in difficult or traumatic situations.
    • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work collaboratively with colleagues both in the Embassy and Consular teams in Greece and in the UK.
    • Attention to detail, strong analytical perspective and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to work at pace and prioritise, managing an often heavy & intense workload.

     

    Humanitarian Programme and Policy Officer – Addis Ababa

    Responsibilities:

    • Provide regular reporting and analysis of humanitarian needs and risks in Ethiopia.  This will include producing regular situation reports, thematic and regional briefs (as required), and leading scenario planning exercises for the team
    • Maintain an effective way of tracking planned and actual results delivered in our humanitarian and resilience programming
    • Lead on the Embassy’s investments in humanitarian data and evidence, ensuring products meet FCDO’s and the wider humanitarian community’s requirements
    • Over time, become the first point of contact for colleagues in London for input into parliamentary questions and other parliamentary and ministerial business

     

    Essential Qualifications:

    • Experience of working on humanitarian issues (e.g. for government, international or national humanitarian organisations, and/or donors).
    • Excellent analytical and data analysis skills, and good experience presenting information in clear information products using relevant IT packages.
    • A proven ability to communicate clearly and confidently, verbally and in writing.
    • Strong understanding of Ethiopian humanitarian policies and architecture.
    • Excellent inter-personal and team working skills, with an ability to multi-task, work flexibly and adapt to emerging issues.

     

    Regional Officer – Trade and Investment – Australia and New Zealand

    Responsibilities:

    • Assist the Regional Director to deliver INI’s trade strategy for ANZ. For clarity, the main export sectors for ANZ, include Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering, Technology, Aerospace and Defence, Food and Beverage, and Life and Health Sciences.
    • Work with the Regional Director and other members of INI’s APAC team to co-ordinate VIP (including Ministerial delegations) visit programmes for trade and investment, prepare briefings and manage the necessary administration, logistics and protocols.
    • Attend regular calls outside of standard working hours with the INI international team and INI clients.
    • Develop and maintain effective working relationships within the British Consulate General, Sydney, Department of Business and Trade (DBT) and other Partners Across Government, Northern Ireland government representatives and other key stakeholders across ANZ.

     

    Essential Qualifications:

    • Educated to degree level, ideally in a business or related function.
    • At least 3 years’ working experience in a private or public sector organisation, with relevant experience in ANZ;
    • A significant and successful track record in Business Development, including market research, analysing market data, preparing reports, presenting information to clients and securing contracts / sales.
    • Good attention to detail, excellent organisational, IT and administrative skills.
    • Good networking skills and experience of building and maintaining effective working relationships across all levels of businesses.
    • The ability to work at pace and independently as part of a remote team.

     

    Digital Content Creator – Paris

    Responsibilities:

    • Creating high quality and bilingual written and visual content including photographs, videos and infographics.
    • Introducing innovative ways of attracting new traffic to our social media channels.
    • Measuring impact of campaigns online and collating and analysing statistics to demonstrate impact.
    • Sharing digital best practice across the France Network by transferring know-how and spotting opportunities.
    • Planning, delivering and measuring the impact of those campaigns. Designing publicity materials and invitations for events and filming and photographing during events.

     

    Essential Qualifications:

    • Excellent English and French language skills (both written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR*);
    • At least 2 to 3 years proven experience in writing engaging, concise social media copy for professional/policy audiences;
    • Firm knowledge of emerging online trends, influencers and social media networks and willingness to pioneer their use within the Network;
    • Good understanding of social media strategies for rolling out Network and FCDO campaigns over multiple channels (website, Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn);
    • Professional photography skills with ability to use DSLR/mirrorless cameras in various lighting conditions Advanced videography skills including filming, lighting, and sound capture;
    • Expert video editing using Adobe Premiere Pro (or similar professional software);
    • Content and Copywriting (Essential);
