What is the Blue Book Traineeship Programme?
The Blue Book Traineeship Programme is a prestigious five-month paid internship offered by the European Commission, designed to provide young graduates worldwide with firsthand experience in EU policymaking and administration.

Who Can Apply?
The Blue Book Traineeship Programme is open to ALL EU citizens with no age restrictions.
A select number of spots are also available for non-EU nationals in specific Directorates-General or Services.
Eligibility
The Blue Book Traineeship Programme is open to university graduates who meet the following criteria:
Education: You must have completed a 3-year university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) at EQF 6 level or higher. You’ll need to provide official proof (a diploma or university certificate).
Work Experience: You must not have worked for more than 6 weeks in any EU institution, agency, delegation, or with MEPs or Advocates General at the EU Court of Justice.
Language Requirements:
For administrative traineeships: You must be fluent in two EU official languages. One must be a working language: English, French, or German at C1 or C2 level, and the second must be at least B2 level.
For non-EU applicants: Only one EU working language at C1 or C2 level is required.
For translation traineeships (DGT): You must translate into your native/target language from two other EU languages:
One must be English, French, or German (C level or native).
The second can be any official EU language at B2 level or higher.
When to Apply
Applications are accepted for the Blue Book Traineeship Programme twice a year.
- For the October programme, registration opens in February (February 17th, 2025 – March 17th, 2025)
- For the March programme, registration opens in July-August of the previous year.

2. Complete and submit application form
Tip: You can submit only one application per session and per type of traineeship.
Preview your application before submission, as changes cannot be effected once you submit it.
3. Submit supporting documents
Tip: This MUST be submitted together with the application form.
Some supporting documents required are:
- Valid passport/Identity card or valid residence card
- Copies of all university degrees/diplomas indicated in the application form and/or transcripts from the relevant university.
- Copies of certifications/licenses obtained, as indicated in the application form.
Note that participation certificates, seminars, and training courses are not accepted.
- Copies of evidence of all declared work experience in the home country, as indicated in the application form, if applicable.
- Copies of evidence of all international experience indicated in the application form, if applicable.
- Evidence of language skills.
How much will my living allowance be?

The traineeship comes with a monthly allowance of €1,418.20. This helps to cover essentials like rent, food, and transportation, ensuring you can focus on learning and networking without financial strain.
While it may not make you wealthy, it’s designed to support a comfortable stay in Belgium or Luxembourg. Plus, you may also qualify for travel cost reimbursements, making the experience even more accessible.
How many hours do trainees work?
Trainees in the Blue Book Traineehip Programme work a total of 40 hours per week. They are entitled to a 2-day paid leave per month. The commission is closed on public holidays, which are not deducted from your paid leave.
Any unused leave days at the end of the traineeship are not paid out.
